The tiny orange newts didn’t suddenly appear on the Appalachian Trail. They were there the whole time.

If you’ve hiked the Appalachian Trail for any length of time, you’ve probably seen one: a tiny, bright-orange salamander standing in the middle of the trail with seemingly no concern whatsoever that a fully loaded thru-hiker is about to step on it.

After it rains, they’re everywhere.

You can walk for hours without seeing one. Then a storm rolls through, the trail gets soaked, and suddenly you’re playing red eft Frogger trying not to crush one.

So where do they all come from?

They were already there.

THE RAIN DOESN’T BRING THEM OUT OF NOWHERE

Red efts are the juvenile terrestrial stage of the eastern newt, Notophthalmus viridescens, a widespread amphibian of eastern North America that depends on both moist forests and quiet freshwater habitats.

Across the Appalachian Trail corridor, those habitats often overlap: wooded slopes, seeps, pond margins, wetlands, and damp leaf litter all give young newts places to hide, feed, and travel.

Like other amphibians, they have permeable skin and depend heavily on moisture. Hot, dry conditions aren’t particularly friendly to a tiny amphibian wandering around on the forest floor, so efts spend a lot of that time tucked beneath leaf litter, logs, rocks, roots, and other damp cover.

Then it rains.

Humidity rises, the forest floor gets wet, temperatures often drop, and conditions become much better for moving around.

The efts that seemed to appear out of nowhere were usually nearby all along, hidden just out of sight.

You’re not necessarily witnessing a sudden explosion in the red eft population.

You’re witnessing a sudden explosion in visible red efts.

THEY’RE ACTUALLY NEWTS

The weirdest thing about the little orange salamanders all over the Appalachian Trail is that they don’t stay little orange salamanders.

Eastern newts begin life in water. Their eggs hatch into aquatic larvae with external gills. After a few months, many transform into the terrestrial stage we recognize as the red eft and leave the water behind.

They can stay on land for several years.

That overland stage matters: it lets young newts disperse through the forest before many eventually return to aquatic habitats as adults.

Eventually, they transform again. Their skin becomes more olive-green or brownish, their tails become better adapted for swimming, and they return to the water as adult eastern newts.

So the little orange creature standing in the middle of the Appalachian Trail is in the wandering adolescent phase of an animal whose life is split between water and forest.

And wandering is exactly what it’s doing.

WHY WOULD SOMETHING SO SMALL BE BRIGHT ORANGE?

Usually, being tiny, slow, and extremely conspicuous isn’t a great survival strategy.

Unless eating you is a bad idea.

Red efts can contain tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin that makes them unpalatable or dangerous to many predators. Their bright orange-red coloration is a warning, a strategy biologists call aposematic coloration.

Basically:

You can see me. You still shouldn’t eat me.

That chemical defense also helps explain something hikers notice pretty quickly: red efts don’t seem particularly worried about us.

They don’t sprint away.

They don’t have much of a sprint.

They just keep walking at approximately red-eft speed while enormous humans try not to step on them.

EVERY NOBO HAS THE PHOTO

There are certain photographs almost everyone seems to accumulate on a northbound Appalachian Trail thru-hike.

The first white blaze. A few early mountain views. A shelter. Your increasingly disgusting shoes.

And eventually, a red eft.

Probably several red efts.

The first time you see one, you stop. You pull out your phone, crouch down, and try to get a picture.

A few hundred miles later, you’ve seen enough that you don’t photograph every one.

But you still notice them.

Then it rains, and the relationship changes entirely. You’re no longer trying to get the perfect picture. You’re staring at the ground trying not to kill anything.

For a lot of AT hikers, the red eft eventually becomes one of those tiny things inseparable from the experience of being on the trail.

Not because anyone told you to look for them.

Because after enough miles, you couldn’t avoid them.

WHY DO HIKERS SEE SO MANY ON THE TRAIL?

Part of the answer may be much simpler than anything happening with the efts.

Hikers spend an absurd amount of time looking at the ground.

We’re watching rocks, roots, mud, snakes, footing, blazes, and the few feet of trail directly in front of us.

A red eft moving through leaf litter can disappear surprisingly well despite being bright orange.

Put the same animal on a strip of brown packed dirt and it might as well be wearing a traffic cone.

The trail also gives us a clear, uninterrupted place to see an animal that spends much of its life moving through a cluttered forest floor.

We’re walking through their habitat while staring directly at our feet.

Of course we see them.

DON’T PICK THEM UP

The temptation is understandable.

They’re tiny, slow, brightly colored, and don’t exactly run away when you crouch beside them.

But they’re still amphibians.

Their skin is permeable, which means oils, sunscreen, bug spray, soap residue, and other substances on our hands can potentially harm them. Handling also creates unnecessary stress for an animal that was doing perfectly fine before a giant with trekking poles arrived.

Take the picture.

Watch it walk.

If one is in immediate danger of being stepped on, give it room and let it continue moving if possible. If you truly need to move it out of harm’s way, use a leaf or small stick rather than bare hands.

It doesn’t need a ride.

THE FOREST CHANGES AFTER IT RAINS

Red efts are one of the easiest examples of something thru-hiking eventually teaches you without anyone formally teaching it.

The woods aren’t the same place every day.

Rain changes them.

So does temperature. Humidity. Season. Time of day.

Spend enough consecutive days outside and you start noticing patterns that are easy to miss on occasional hikes.

The birds sound different in the morning.

Certain flowers appear for a few weeks and disappear.

Streams that barely existed suddenly become obstacles.

And after rain, the forest floor seems to fill with tiny orange newts.

They didn’t magically appear.

The conditions changed enough for you to notice them.

That’s one of the strange privileges of spending months walking through the same ecosystem.

Eventually, you stop seeing the forest as scenery.

You start noticing who’s living there with you.

The red efts were there the whole time.

The rain just changed the conditions enough for your worlds to overlap.
