Meet the Casa de Luna Manzanita Forest

A little trail-side knowledge about the inspiration behind the print.

Smooth as Bark Gets

Manzanita trees have striking, smooth, red or orange bark that naturally peels away, revealing fresh color underneath. It’s basically the exfoliator of the forest.

Snack Time for Wildlife

Their tiny apple-like berries (manzanita means “little apple” in Spanish) are a favorite treat for bears, birds, and hikers with a taste for trail-foraged teas and jams.

Fire-Resistant and Fierce

Manzanitas are incredibly drought-tolerant and can survive wildfires thanks to their thick bark and deep roots. They’re tough, scrappy survivors—just like your favorite thru-hikers.

Where You’ll Find Them

Manzanita trees and shrubs are found throughout the western United States, especially in California’s chaparral landscapes, and notably around Green Valley, where trail angels Terrie and Joe Anderson created the legendary hiker haven, Casa de Luna. Inspired and selected by Terrie and Joe themselves, this print celebrates the manzanita-covered hills surrounding their home, where they generously hosted nearly 20,000 Pacific Crest Trail hikers over two decades. It’s a tribute to the landscape, and the love, that defined Casa de Luna.
