Meet the Hops

A little trail-side knowledge about the inspiration behind the print.

Hops Are Basically Climbers

Hops can grow up to a foot in a single day during peak season. Give them something to climb and they’ll absolutely send it, sometimes reaching 20+ feet in a season.

They’re Going the Same Direction

Hop bines naturally climb clockwise around whatever they can grab onto. Try to train them the other way and they’ll often correct themselves. Apparently even plants have opinions about route choice.

A Trail Snack, Technically

Young hop shoots are edible and can be cooked a bit like asparagus. They’ve even earned the nickname “hop asparagus.” Probably don’t start harvesting random trailside plants for dinner, though.

Where You’ll Find Them

Hops grow all over, but we prefer to find ours at the end of a long day on trail. The AT has plenty of worthy detours, from Appalachian Trail towns with local taps to breweries like Devils Backbone in Virginia and Appalachian Mountain Brewery down in Boone. Out west, PCT hikers can find plenty of hop-forward motivation around Bend, while CDT hikers have Colorado and Montana doing what they do best: putting breweries suspiciously close to places that make your legs hurt. Coincidence? We’re not asking questions.
