Monarch Migration Sun Hoodie

Our Monarch Print has landed. A classic, trail-tested design inspired by one of the most iconic travelers in the natural world.

True-To-Trail Print: Inspired by the monarch butterfly’s legendary migration across North America. From milkweed-lined meadows to mountain valleys and long trails in between, this print is a nod to resilience, movement, and finding your way back.

With a loose t-shirt-like fit and UPF50+ fabric, you’ll stay comfy all day whether you’re wandering local trails, logging big miles, or just soaking up the sun. The smart lay-flat seam design, kangaroo-style front pocket, and breathable hood are all built from lightweight, protective fabric that’s made to move.

Design inspiration: The Monarch Butterfly

Meet the The Monarch Butterfly

A little trail-side knowledge about the inspiration behind the print.

Built-In GPS (Somehow?!)

Monarchs migrate thousands of miles to the exact same overwintering spots their great-great-grandparents used. No map. No phone. Just vibes and the sun.

Milkweed or Bust

Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed. That’s it. It makes them toxic to predators, which is basically nature’s version of “don’t even try it.”

Four Generations, One Journey

The full migration happens over multiple generations. The butterflies that finish the trip were never taught the route and have never been there before.

Where You’ll Find Them

Monarch butterflies are most commonly found across North America in open, sunny habitats where milkweed grows. You’ll spot them in meadows, fields, roadsides, gardens, and along trail edges, especially during spring and summer. In the fall, they funnel south during migration, eventually gathering in dense clusters in central Mexico’s high-elevation forests and along parts of coastal California, depending on the population. If there’s sun, space to roam, and milkweed nearby, monarchs are right at home.

My 4th shirt!

This is my 4th shirt. I bought the PCT and woodgrain shirts back in 2024 and wore them almost every hike. They are still in excellent shape but finally started fading out so I decided to upgrade this year.

I bought the Rock Chuck shirt in January and let me tell you, nothing I’ve ever worn before geta the attention of them dirt woodland creatures. Nearly everyone I pass on trail comments.

I wanted to make sure it didn’t look like I was posting the same hike in the same shirt every time so purchased the aqua Seven Peaks last month. Sure, it’s doesn’t get the attention of the Rock Chuck but it’s still the same great quality shirt as the others. And the light color helps in the baking California sun. my only gripe is I wish it had the town shirt logo on it like most of the others. It helps when someone ask where I got it from but I can’t talk be it in out of breath climbing a hill

Sincere compliments to Dylan

This Bluebell was purchased for my wife at the same time as the Red Eft hoodie I reviewed previously. That review applies to this shirt also. We are both pleased with all the products we have acquired from Townshirt. Our sincere compliments to Dylan.

Best Trekking Shirt Ever

What a perfect shirt. I purchased a large which is a bit oversized for me but I love it! I wore it on a quick three day backpacking trek near Grouse Ridge in Sierra Nevadas. I received numerous compliments and my 9 year grandson thought it was pretty cool. Although he truly believes that the marmots are actually otters. I’m still working on animal identification with him. Love this shirt!

Excellent sun shirt

First the design of the Sun Hoodie is excellent! It's incredibly comfortable and the fabric print with the Rock Chucks is about the most adorable thing around. I love the thumb loops, front pocket, and adjustable hood. The fabric is extremely light and breathable. I took it out for the first time in Big Bend Ranch State Park and it performed very well. I might dip it in permethrin to help keep biting insects at bay. So far I'm extremely pleased with this shirt and ordered two more! Thank you Town Shirt!

Keep making these sun hoodies!

I consider myself somewhat of a gearhead, and I have tried many brands. This sun hoodie is hands-down one of the best pieces I own. It keeps me cool in the hot Arizona desert, and keeps the sun off my face with the enclosed hoodie that snaps together under your chin for extra coverage. I own 2 of these hoodies and I just ordered two more!

5 star shirt!

I don’t know how they do it, but this is the most amazing shirt. The lily print is cool on hot days and warm on cool days. Just buy the shirt. My favorite. I have other brands of a “sun shirt” but this one is the very best. Well worth the $$. Again, just buy the shirt. The biggest problem is choosing which print.

My Church Townshirt

A lovely print that delights little old ladies in southern churches. This print was so nice my mom let me wear it to church. I now refer to this as my “fancy” Townshirt.

Really want to love this shirt but...

Positive: I really love the look, and that they have big sizes. Looks great, dries super fast. E-Mails were answered immediately and the shirt came quickly, even to Europe. Quite comfortable even when it is hot, unless it gets very humid, then it feels sticky. On the other hand, some loose threads after only a couple of days wearing it, and it does smell, especially on day 2 without shower. Not as bad as cheap synthetics, can tell it is high quality material. Have not worn it for longer yet... not sure if I can bear the smell for a week without showers. Compared to what I usually wear (Merino wool), the smell is a big difference. On the other hand, Merino is too hot with long sleeves (at least for me). So we'll see how it goes... maybe I'll get used to it.

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Kathrin. We’re glad to hear you liked the look, sizing, quick dry time, shipping speed, and customer service.

Any shirt worn for multiple hot days between washes can pick up body odor, especially in humid conditions. Our fabric is built around sun protection, quick drying, breathability, stretch, durability, and comfort in warm weather.

The loose threads are the part we’d like to take a closer look at. That is not something we want to see after only a couple days of wear. Please email us a photo when you have a chance so we can review it and make it right if there is a construction issue.

Thanks again for taking the time to share detailed feedback.
