Seeing Red (Underwater!)

Loons have striking red eyes that help them see clearly while diving for fish. The color may also play a role in mating or reducing glare on the water.

Feathered Submarines

With dense bones and powerful legs, loons are built for diving. They can plunge over 200 feet and stay underwater for up to a minute while hunting!

Unlike most birds, loons can’t just lift off—they need a long stretch of water to sprint across before taking flight, like a little feathered airplane.

Where You’ll Find Them

Loons are most commonly found on freshwater lakes and large ponds in northern North America, especially in Canada and the northern United States. During the summer, they nest on quiet, clear lakes in forested regions, where they can find plenty of fish and space to take off and land. In winter, they migrate to coastal ocean waters, particularly along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, where they spend the colder months feeding in saltwater bays and estuaries.
