Meet the The Red Eft

A little trail-side knowledge about the inspiration behind the print.

Bright for a Reason

That striking red-orange color? It’s aposematic coloration, which warns predators that it’s toxic. Its skin secretes a mild neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin - enough to make predators spit it out and remember the experience.

Forest Wanderers

Red efts leave the water after hatching and spend 2 to 7 years roaming the forest floor before heading back to the water to transform into a fully aquatic adult newt.

Spotted When It Rains

You’ll most likely spot red efts in spring and fall, especially after a rain when they’re out in force on hiking trails and forest paths.

Where You’ll Find Them

You can find red efts throughout the eastern United States, especially in moist forests near streams, marshes, and ponds, where they thrive in damp, shaded environments.
